Day 12: Dingwall to Altnaharra
Our penultimate day, and the shortest one in terms of distance. Only 59 miles. Only! By the end of today we’ll have covered around 900 miles over 12 consecutive days. It’ll be nice to know that all being well, today may be a couple of hours less in the saddle.
Leaving Dingwall a little later in the morning and baited up, our first stop will be Struie Hill Viewpoint where we get to look across Dornoch Firth. Prior to this we will have passed through Alness and climbed up to around a height of 800ft.
Leaving the viewpoint we head down into Bonar Bridge and pass the Falls of Shin forestry area before arriving in Lairg.
With Lairg Dam behind us, we pass by Loch Shin and take a right onto single lane roads where we start to ascend for a couple of hours from about 35 miles in. Leaving Lairg we leave civilisation as we head to Altnaharra.
Later, and in what can only be described as the middle of nowhere, in the distance a building can be seen emerging. That building is The Crask Inn. Knowing that it’s just 8 mile downhill from here to the nights accommodation, a couple of beers may be very welcomed. Why not. After all, we’re almost coming to the end of this incredible journey.
